95% Chasing Ice

All Critics (64) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (3)

Global Warming? "Seeing is believing."

The most important documentary of the year.

"Chasing Ice" is a grand adventure, a visual amazement and a powerful warning.

If you're looking for eye-popping evidence that the world's glaciers are melting, don't miss the small-scale but spectacular documentary, Chasing Ice.

The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful.

The movie might have given us a bit less of Balog and a bit more of the startling sequences he produced.

Chasing Ice will open your eyes to a world you've never seen before and it will make you think. But whether any of us can change anything is a different matter altogether.

While skeptics continue to doubt global warming is a man-made phenomenon - Rush Limbaugh called warnings about it "garbage science" - "Chasing Ice" leaves little doubt it is occurring.

It's an absorbing and vital watch.

It's like watching our world disappear.

A few scientists pop their heads in here, a few charts are deployed, but Chasing Ice is powered primarily by the imagery, stark, irrefutable evidence that the planet is warming, not in one or two isolated places but everywhere.

"Chasing Ice" is a beautiful film to watch, especially on the big screen. But the documentary's visual pleasures come with a heavy dose of guilt.

It's sobering stuff but the film's impact is somewhat diminished by Orlowski's reverential profile of Balog, who continues to crusade despite the toll his endeavours have taken on his body.

The documentary feels a little slight but the images speak for themselves ...

Is this about the hazards of global warming or the awesomeness of James Balog? Not entirely sure...

If any film can convert the climate-change sceptics, Chasing Ice would be it: here, seeing really is believing.

While more detailed scientific analysis and greater discussion of impacts would have been welcome, the film's visual rhetoric is solid.

National Geographic photographer James Balog illustrates climate change with time-lapsed records of glacial retreat.

A project of heroic, Herzogian endeavour. Mad, you might say. But probably not as mad as what the rest of us are doing about climate change: namely almost nothing.

Sweet Desert Home: What's a REALTOR??

Many people use the word Realtor as a synonym for real estate agent. I was surprised to learn that only 30% of the real estate agents in Arizona are Realtors. Most real estate agents are in sole proprietorships or small companies where they have little oversight and training. In Tucson, the largest companies require that their agents be Realtors.

Why does this matter? Realtors (or REALTORS??as the National Association of Realtors wants us to spell it) have sworn to uphold the 17 page Realtor Code of Ethics. Eighteen years ago this March, I actually had to stand up in a room with?one hundred other new agents, raise my right hand, and?swear to?uphold the Code of Ethics. We need to take a refresher course in the Code of Ethics every four years when we renew our real estate licenses.

This Code is over 100 years old, and has been updated to keep up with changes in the business and technology. I think these are the two most important paragraphs:

The term REALTOR? has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from
adherence to a lofty ideal of moral conduct in business relations. No inducement of profit and no
instruction from clients ever can justify departure from this ideal.

In the interpretation of this obligation, REALTORS? can take no safer guide than that which has been handed down through the centuries, embodied in the Golden Rule, ?Whatsoever ye would that others should do to you, do ye even so to them.?

Oh, by the way, it's pronounced just the way it is spelled, not Reel-lah-ter!

Police summons opposition politicians

Col. Kiiza Besigye, one of those summoned by the police

The police have today summoned four activists of the For God and My Country pressure group to appear at the Special Investigations Unit.

Those summoned are MPs Muwanga Kivumbi and Mathius Mpuuga, Justice Forum president Asuman Basarirwa and FDC?s Ingrid Turinawe.

Also summoned is former FDC leader Dr. Kiza Besigye who is expected to report at the SIU for questioning on Sunday.

According to the police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Ibin Senkumbi the four face charges of managing an unlawful society.

Senkumbi says the group is required to explain their involvement in a planned city clean up exercise that has already been stopped by the police.

However, one of the summoned MPs Mathias Mpuuga says he has not received any summons from either the police or the Speaker of parliament.

Meanwhile

Traders along Kafumbe Mukasa road, one of the areas scheduled for clean-up, have appealed to police to block the exercise.

The angry traders are concerned that whenever politicians visit their area their businesses are affected and some even end up with injuries or being arrested.

They say they have learnt to appreciate their poor sanitary environment advising politicians to take the clean-up exercise elsewhere.

UK GDP falls more than forecast in fourth quarter

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's economy shrank more than expected at the end of 2012 with a North Sea oil production slump, lower factory output and a hangover from London' Olympics pushing it perilously close to a "triple-dip" recession.

The country's gross domestic product fell 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday, a sharper fall than the 0.1 percent decline forecast by analysts.

The news is a blow for Britain's Conservative-led government, which a day earlier defended its austerity programme against criticism from the International Monetary Fund. It needs solid growth to meet its budget targets, keep a triple-A debt rating and bolster its chances of winning a 2015 election.

Sterling fell to its lowest in 13-1/2 months against the euro and hit a five-month low against the dollar in response to the data. The euro was also buoyed by a stronger-than-expected German Ifo sentiment survey.

"This is a very disappointing outturn," said Philip Shaw, economist at Investec in London. "Clearly now the talk will focus on whether we are in a triple dip recession. Certainly the news is unwanted."

Britain's economy is now 3.3 percent smaller than its peak in Q1 2008, having recovered only about half the output lost during the financial crisis - a worse performance than most other major economies.

The country slipped back into recession in the last three months of 2011, and only emerged from it in the third quarter of 2012, after a boost from the London Olympics.

After a bout of inclement snowy weather in January - which is likely to have hit spending and output - the risk is that the economy will continue to shrink in the first three months of this year, technically pushing it into a rare and unwelcome "triple dip" recession.

Britain's biggest department store group, John Lewis, said earlier on Friday that snow was responsible for its sales growth stalling in the latest week.

POLITICALLY INCENDIARY

In economic terms, the picture remains one of stagnation over the past year. But politically, the latest dip in national output is more incendiary.

"Stagnation is going to be the theme for the next couple of quarters or so. This obviously brings Osborne's strategy into sharp relief and also the (Bank of England) strategy of maintaining or not sanctioning further monetary policy action," said Rob Wood at Berenberg Bank. "The Bank of England were forecasting a return to some growth in Q1 and that is likely to be disappointed."

Chancellor George Osborne stuck fast to his austerity plan on Thursday, rejecting suggestions from the International Monetary Fund's chief economist that he should consider slowing his deficit reduction plan.

Prime Minister David Cameron this week staked his political future on offering a referendum on Britain's place in the European Union. But it is Osborne's gamble that austerity will deliver strong growth before a 2015 election that will be crucial in determining his Conservative party's chance of winning.

After the figures were released, the Treasury conceded that Britain still faced a "very difficult economic situation".

"While the economy is healing, it is still a difficult road," it said in a statement.

Britain's chief central banker Mervyn King expects no more than a "gentle recovery" this year, while this week the IMF cut its 2013 forecast for British economic growth to 1.0 percent from 1.1 percent predicted in October.

However, economists and business groups warn that even such lacklustre growth could be derailed by a hit to firms' and consumers' confidence from talk of a triple-dip recession.

That prospect will add to pressure on the ruling coalition of Conservatives and Lib Dems to loosen its deficit-cutting drive and bolster the economy as George Osborne prepares his 2013 budget, due in March.

The biggest driver for the fourth-quarter fall in GDP was a 10.2 percent drop in mining and quarrying output, the biggest since records began in 1997, driven by disruption from extended maintenance affecting North Sea oil and gas fields.

This knocked 0.18 percent off GDP, while slightly smaller amounts of damage were done by falls in factory output and in the 'government and other services' category, where the Olympics had boosted sports and recreation services in the third quarter.

Friday's figures showed output in the service sector -- which makes up more than three quarters of GDP -- was flat in the fourth quarter. Industrial output was 1.8 percent lower.

Extinction rates not as bad as feared ... for now: Scientists challenge common belief

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Concerns that many animals are becoming extinct, before scientists even have time to identify them, are greatly overstated, according Griffith University researcher, Professor Nigel Stork. Professor Stork has taken part in an international study, the findings of which have been detailed in "Can we name Earth's species before they go extinct?" published in the journal Science.

Deputy Head of the Griffith School of Environment, Professor Stork said a number of misconceptions have fueled these fears, and there is no evidence that extinction rates are as high as some have feared.

"Surprisingly, few species have gone extinct, to our knowledge. Of course, there will have been some species which have disappeared without being recorded, but not many we think," Professor Stork said.

Professor Stork said part of the problem is that there is an inflated sense of just how many animals exist and therefore how big the task to record them.

"Modern estimates of the number of eukaryotic species have ranged up to 100 million, but we have estimated that there are around 5 million species on the planet (plus or minus 3 million)."

And there are more scientists than ever working on the task. This contrary to a common belief that we are losing taxonomists, the scientists who identify species.

"While this is the case in the developed world where governments are reducing funding, in developing nations the number of taxonomists is actually on the rise.

"World-wide there are now two to three times as many taxonomist describing species as there were 20 years ago."

Even so, Professor Stork says the scale of the global taxonomic challenge is not to be underestimated.

"The task of identifying and naming all existing species of animals is still daunting, as there is much work to be done."

Other good news for the preservation of species is that conservation efforts in the past few years have done a good job in protecting some key areas of rich biodiversity.

But the reprieve may be short-lived.

"Climate change will dramatically change species survival rates, particularly when you factor in other drivers such as overhunting and habitat loss," Professor Stork said.

"At this stage we have no way of knowing by how much extinction rates may escalate.

"But once global warming exceeds the 2 degree barrier, we can expect to see the scale of loss many people already believe is happening. Higher temperature rises coupled with other environmental impacts will lead to mass extinctions"

Unlucky in love? Don't make snap financial decisions

By Linda Carroll , NBC News contributor

If you?ve just had a battle with your best friend or been dumped by your betrothed, now is not the time to make investment decisions, a new study suggests.

Researchers have found that when people feel socially isolated they?re more likely to make risky financial choices, according to the study published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

And while risky bets sometimes pay off, they can also be disastrous, says the study?s lead author Rod Duclos, an assistant professor of marketing at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management.

?These findings should come as a word of caution to consumers,? Duclos says. ?Because feelings of social exclusion can shift their idiosyncratic risk-to-benefit ratio, consumers may [want to] choose to delay important financial decisions, such as choosing a mortgage, a retirement scheme, or stock portfolio following a breakup or a fallout with friends.?

Why would being dumped cause us to make risky bets?

It all comes down to the relationship between social isolation and money, Duclos says.

People often crave popularity, he explains. When they can?t have that, they turn to financial success as a proxy. In other words, if you?re unhappy because you?re unpopular, you?ll seek succor in money.

To prove this, Duclos and his colleagues ran several experiments using college students as their guinea pigs.

In one experiment, 59 study volunteers played an online ball tossing game, called Cyberball. The game was played by groups of three participants who would throw a virtual ball back and forth. To look at the impact of social isolation, the researchers manipulated the game so that some participants would get the ball tossed to them only rarely.

The strategy seemed to work. On a questionnaire after the game, volunteers were asked to rate between 1 and 5, how ?rejected? or ?left out? they felt. Sure enough those who hardly ever got to play said they felt very rejected and left out.

The second part of the experiment gave the volunteers a choice between a relatively safe bet ? an 80 percent chance of winning $200 with a 20 percent chance of winning nothing ? and a risky bet that promised greater reward ? a 20 percent chance of winning $800 and an 80 percent chance of winning nothing.

Those who felt left out were far more likely to choose the risky, but potentially more lucrative bet.

To make sure that their experiments weren?t biased by the age of the study volunteers, the researchers also did a survey of people they met at malls, subway stations, and parks in Hong Kong. Like the student volunteers, those who felt more socially isolated were the ones who were more drawn to risky bets, like horse-racing, instead of safer ones like savings accounts.

Ultimately, Duclos says, people just need to recognize that social isolation has an impact ? and they should postpone making any major financial decisions till they?ve recovered from a breakup or argument with friends.

Three Key Steps to Start the Home Buying Process | Charlesgate ...

So you?re reading this blog. You?re reading the newspapers. You?re starting to see things shape up as a good time to buy in the Boston real estate market.

But now what?

You may not be quite sure what do to.

Well, here are a few things to help you on your way:

Step 1: Learn the Home Buying Process

Get familiar with the real estate market in the neighborhoods or towns you want to buy and learn the home buying process by attending a first time home buyer class. The home buyer class will cover everything from what you can afford and how mortgage financing works to all the pitfalls you need to avoid to be a successful home buyer in today?s fast paced Boston real estate market.

Step 2: Meet with a Buyer Agent

Finding a good buyers agent is critical. An experienced agent will help guide you through the the entire process. Sit down with your agent for a complimentary buyer consultation and spend the time to discuss your needs as they relate to the market and the buying process.

It?s a lot of info, so expect to spend about an hour. You?ll get a lot of great info, build rapport and have all your questions answered. When you leave you should feel comfortable that you understand what to expect for service from the agent and that the agent understands what you?re looking for.

The buyer agent will also set you up to receive new listings via email to monitor the market (or you can request listings now).

However, your agent should be in touch with you regularly. Listings will come on market and you need to know about them quickly, given such limited inventory in the market right now. So, expect to hear from your agent about the best listings before you find them online. That?s one of the reasons to meet for an initial buying consultation and explain your needs in detail to your buyer agent ? it helps him do his job better.

Step 3: Get Preapproved for a Mortgage

The agent will also instruct you to get in touch with a mortgage person to get pre-approved. This will let you how much you can afford ?and the proper price range in which you should be searching for a home.

This pre-approval will also be expected by any seller when you make an offer. So having one is essential for being prepared when you find the home for you.

Having taken the time to have the home buying process explained, meeting with a qualified buyer?s agent, and getting pre-approved for a mortgage will prepare you for your exciting journey to homeownership!

Florida Estate Planning: Protecting Your Assets | Siben & Siben ...

In Florida, as in elsewhere, when planning your estate and protecting your assets, decisions should be made with the advice and under the guidance of an attorney. However, for whatever reason, many people fail to take adequate measures to protect their assets. If you plan to go it alone make certain that your family will not be left with only a large burden of debt by at least taking the following actions.

One: Create and sign a financial power of attorney, which will designate an agent of your choosing who would be responsible for handling your financial affairs should you become in any way incapacitated. This designated agent, whether a professional, a friend or family member will be able to pay your bills manage your investments, your insurance and your taxes should you be unable to do so. Failing to do so would necessitate your family to getting court permission to handle these basic tasks-an unnecessary expense.

2)Designate a health-care surrogate, who will assist in make decisions about your health care when you cannot. This person will be responsible for making certain that your living will is executed properly and that your end-of-life instructions are fulfilled as ordered. It would also be prudent to create a living will.

3)Review your designated beneficiaries annually. Check on all forms on file with your bank, in your retirement accounts and your life insurance policies.

Make certain that, if you?ve listed your wife is listed as your beneficiary, you?ve also list your children as contingent beneficiaries, in the event that something should happen to your spouse. This could save your children thousands of dollars in tax liability.

Next, assess your net worth. List all of your assets including your home, vehicles, bank accounts, investments, CDs, cash on hand and all items valued in excess of five hundred dollars.

Then make a separate listing of all of your liabilities including any debts, outstanding loans and your mortgage. Tally your assets and debts and keep these figures on hand when speaking with an accountant, a financial advisor or an estate planning attorney.

Create a will, or if you already have one, make certain it is up to date, to ensure that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. Take into account any new family members, deaths, births, marriages and divorces.

Seven: Title your assets properly. Failing to title your assets properly can undo your asset protection plan. In the case of a married couple who have created wills, or a credit shelter trust, in order to preserve the estate tax exemption, and protect the surviving spouse from bankruptcy, you must keep all assets titled separately, or no longer qualify for the benefit . if however you choose to have your estates distributed through living trusts, make certain that the assets are retitled in the name of that trust. Yes this is complicated and it would behoove you to contact an estate planning attorney to ensure you have titled your assets properly.

Eight: Distribute as much of your wealth as you can while you?re alive. You are entitled to gift up to $13,000 each year in cash stock or other property to anyone, estate tax free. You may also pay for any person?s college or private school tuition (as long as the check is sent directly to the school) in addition to that $13,000 a year gift allowance. Likewise you may pay for any other person?s medical expenses, as long as the check is sent directly to the healthcare provider. You may also give up to $1 million to anyone and receive a single lifetime gift tax extension.

An estate planning attorney can advise you regarding the creation of various trusts and tax shelters, which can save your family a great deal of money. It would be wise to set an appointment with a professional.

While taking these steps alone can save your family a great deal of grief and money, to make certain that your hard-earned assets are protected from all who would prey upon them, it would be wise to consult a professional, to establish a relationship with a Florida estate planning attorney.

Another reason for consulting an attorney is to discuss methods of dealing with estate taxes. Although Florida does not, at this time, collect estate tax, in these uncertain financial times, there no telling what changes are in store from Florida and the Federal government. With this in mind, it?d be wise to work with an estate planning attorney to consider drafting a combination of will and trusts as soon as possible.

Helena Talbot's blog ? Relocating? Top 5 Reasons to Find the Right ...

Believe it or not, even though selling and buying a home is one of the most stressful, most important financial and lifestyle investments you?ll ever make, most people spend very little time in selecting a real estate agent to work with. Even worse, most people tend to believe that all real estate agents are the same and possess the same skill sets and capabilities.
As a member of the Top 5 in Real Estate Network?, an elite group of real estate agents that requires members to meet a series of stringent criteria before joining, I know all too well how wrong the above perceptions are. When confronting any real estate decision, especially one that involves relocating to a different region or state, it is critical to select an agent with the necessary skills, experience and proven results.

Here are the top 5 reasons to use a professional real estate agent to handle your relocation:

1. New 'social' chromosome discovered in the red fire ant

Jan. 16, 2013 ? Researchers have discovered a social chromosome in the highly invasive fire ant that helps to explain why some colonies allow for more than one queen ant, and could offer new solutions for dealing with this pest.

The red fire ants live in two different types of colonies: some colonies strictly have a single queen while other colonies contain hundreds of queens.

Publishing in the journal Nature on January 16, scientists have discovered that this difference in social organisation is determined by a chromosome that carries one of two variants of a 'supergene' containing more than 600 genes.

The two variants, B and b, differ in structure but have evolved similarly to the X and Y chromosomes that determine the sex of humans. If the worker fire ants in a colony carry exclusively the B variant, they will accept a single BB queen, but a colony that includes worker fire ants with the b variant will accept multiple Bb queens. The scientists analysed the genomes of more than 500 red fire ants to understand this phenomenon.

"This was a very surprising discovery -- similar differences in chromosomal structure are linked to wing patterns in butterflies and to cancer in humans but this is the first supergene ever identified that determines social behaviour," explains co-author Dr Yannick Wurm, from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences.

"We now understand that chromosomal variants determine social form in the fire ant and it's possible that special chromosomes also determine fundamental traits such as behaviour in other species."

During the reproductive season, young winged queens from both types of colonies emerge for their mating flights and are fertilised by males. Young queens destined to establish their own single-queen colonies disperse far and wide. This social form is highly successful at invading new territories. The other young queens join existing multiple-queen colonies close to their maternal colony. The multiple queens cooperating in such colonies are able to produce more workers than are found in a single-queen colony. This makes multiple queen colonies the more successful social form in busy environments.

The red fire ant is infamous for its painful sting in South America where it is a native species, and in many other parts of the world where its aggressiveness and high population density have made it an invasive pest. It was accidentally introduced to the Southern USA in the 1930s and has since spread to many warm parts of the world including China and Australia. Efforts at controlling the spread of this species have largely been unsuccessful, as indicated by its Latin name, Solenopsis invicta, meaning "the invincible."

Dr. Wurm added, "Our discovery could help in developing novel pest control strategies. For example, a pesticide could artificially deactivate the genes in the social chromosome and induce social anarchy within the colony."

Migraine with aura may lead to heart attack, blood clots for women

Jan. 15, 2013 ? Women who have migraines with aura, which are often visual disturbances such as flashing lights, may be more likely to have problems with their heart and blood vessels, and those on newer contraceptives may be at higher risk for blood clots, according to two studies released today that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 65th Annual Meeting in San Diego, March 16 to 23, 2013.

The first study showed that migraine with aura is a strong contributor to the development of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. The Women's Health Study involved 27,860 women, 1,435 of whom had migraine with aura. During the 15-year study, there were 1,030 cases of heart attack, stroke or death from a cardiovascular cause. The study examined the relative contribution of various vascular risk factors to these major cardiovascular events.

"After high blood pressure, migraine with aura was the second strongest single contributor to risk of heart attacks and strokes," said study author Tobias Kurth, MD, ScD, of INSERM, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Bordeaux and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Kurth is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. "It came ahead of diabetes, current smoking, obesity, and family history of early heart disease."

Kurth cautioned that while people with migraine with aura have an increased risk, it does not mean that everyone with migraine with aura will have a heart attack or stroke. He said people with migraine with aura can reduce their risk in the same ways others can, such as not smoking, keeping blood pressure low and weight down and exercising.

The second study looked at women with migraine who take hormonal contraceptives and the occurrence of blood clots. The study involved women with migraine with and without aura who were taking both newer contraceptives such as the contraceptive patch and ring and older contraceptives. Of the 145,304 women who used the contraceptives, 2,691 had migraine with aura and 3,437 had migraine without aura.

Women with migraine with aura were more likely to have experienced blood clot complications such as deep vein thrombosis with all types of contraceptives than women with migraine without aura. For example, 7.6 percent of women with migraine with aura who used a newer generation combined hormonal contraceptive had deep vein thrombosis compared to 6.3 percent of women with migraine without aura, but the timing of the two events is not clear. The occurrence of blood clot complications was also higher in women with migraine who took contraceptives than women taking the contraceptives who did not have migraine.

"Women who have migraine with aura should be sure to include this information in their medical history and talk to their doctors about the possible higher risks of newer contraceptives, given their condition," said study author Shivang Joshi, MD, MPH, RPh, of Brigham and Women's Falkner Hospital in Boston and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

New Chargers coach has to turn Rivers around

New Chargers coach has to turn Rivers around

By BILL LANKOFF, QMI Agency

The NFL?s Fab Four may be preparing for Sunday?s Super Bowl prelim but for everybody else it?s time to figure out what went wrong.

In Seattle, head coach Pete Carroll didn?t waste time pin-pointing Job 1.

He needs to clone J.J. Watt.

In San Diego, there is hope a new coach can figure out how to keep Philip Rivers from turning into Mark Sanchez.

In Cleveland, they?ve sold the name of the stadium for a big influx of corporate cash and, in Kansas City, Andy Reid is trying to find out if his offence has a pulse.

?We need another pass rusher,? Carroll said, after the Seahawks failed to lay a finger on quarterback Matt Ryan in their playoff farewell. ?We went out and got Jason (Jones) last year. And we?re going to have to double it up. We need a couple of guys.?

Seattle?s secondary and run defence was the key to allowing the fewest points per game in the league.

LA Dem Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: Obama Must Act Like A Dictator On Debt Ceiling To Stop GOP ?Extremists? From Putting Us In Default?

I wonder if Villaraigosa knows Obama chose default in 2006 when he voted against raising the debt ceiling?

(CNSNews.com) ? Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Monday, said that if it comes to it, the president should invoke the 14th Amendment, because the U.S. ?can?t let extremists put us in default.?

?I would hope it wouldn?t come to that, but if it has to, it must,? Villaraigosa said when asked whether President Barack Obama should ?invoke the 14th Amendment and ignore Congress to deal with the debt ceiling.?

?We can?t let extremists put us in default and play chicken with the full faith and credit of the United States of America,? the mayor said. ?And that?s what they are.

Rosetta Montgomery shared American Miles's blog post on Facebook

I was really looking forward to going back to my life on November 6, 2012. To relax and pursue things I am interested in, writing, traveling and spending time with my family and grandchildren. To finally feel safe that my great country was back in sound hands, and would be led by a loyal American who would base his leadership on the Constitution of the United States and be a leader for ALL Americans. I would not have to wake up every morning wondering what freedom the president was going to destroy today. Or how much will it cost me and future generations. Sadly, I did not get that opportunity.

?

However, the mission will not sway me. I will continue to fight, because this nation is worth it. The future of my children and grandchildren is worth it. They deserve the same kind of free country I have had the privilege to grow up in. Past generations deserve the recognition and respect that what they suffered and worked so hard for truly matters, and made a difference.

?

Unlike Mr. Obama, I believe we are an exceptional nation; I trust in God and I appreciate all the blood and sacrifice of those who came before me. I will not sit idly by and watch that sacrifice be humiliated and diminished in vain. I will not allow evil to consume my grand-children?s future and promise. I will not permit tyranny to overtake this Republic. There are too many dictatorships in the world to choose from, the United States isn?t one of them.

?

Though I am weary from tracking the calculated deliberate destruction agenda, writing letters, signing petitions and making phone calls, I will never surrender. I will challenge every threat to our freedom, every overreach of power, every evil deed. I will call it for what it is, rather than wallow in the deception of denial for the sake of comfort. There is no reason to keep asking, ?Why? when the answer is clearly in the outcome. A soldier on the battlefield does not have the luxury to ask why an enemy is shooting at him; he just knows it is a matter of survival to shoot back. Motives of the enemy are of no consequence. The victory is defined by life preserved and protected.

?

I do not know what the problem is in Washington. Whether it is a lack of courage or loyalty to their oath. Either way we cannot afford to rely on their judgment. It is evident that the seduction of power has overruled ethics and honor. Consciousness of right has left the building and has been replaced by personal gain.

?

The breath of life for this nation must come from We the People. The same way our Founders fought with nothing more than muskets, lanterns and the will to be free. We must stand united to ignite that resolve. The Declaration of Independence ends with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence and a pledge to each other of their lives, fortunes and sacred honor. It was not a decision they made lightly, or backed away from when things got tough. They finished the job and established the greatest free nation on earth. It is up to us, it is our solemn duty to keep it.

?

Let Freedom Ring

(AP) ? Richard Wayne Landers Jr. was just 5 years old when he and his paternal grandparents, who were upset over custody arrangements, disappeared a small town in northern Indiana.

Nineteen years later, news that he has been found living under an assumed name in Minnesota left his mother overjoyed and "jumping up and down," her husband said Thursday shortly after police announced the break in the case.

Indiana State Police said the now 24-year-old Landers was found in Long Prairie, Minn., thanks in part to his Social Security number. His grandparents were living under aliases in a nearby town and confirmed his identity, investigators said.

Police declined to say whether the grandparents will face charges, citing the ongoing investigation.

Landers' mother, Lisa Harter, was "jumping up and down for joy" when investigators told her a few days ago that her son had been found, her husband Richard Harter told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

He said his wife is "the happiest woman on earth."

Harter said he and his wife were working with an attorney and hoped to reunite with his stepson soon. Police said Landers is married and expecting his first child.

Harter declined further comment and referred questions about the case to his attorney, who didn't immediately return phone messages Thursday. Investigators declined to release the names under which Landers and his grandparents had been living.

Police said the boy's paternal grandparents, Richard E. and Ruth A. Landers, abducted him in July 1994 because they were "upset over pending court proceedings" regarding his placement.

Police spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz said it appears the boy's father was never in the picture. Lisa and Richard Harter had married a year earlier.

Authorities believe the grandparents took the boy from their home in Wolcottville, about 50 miles southwest of South Bend, and fled. They were charged at the time with misdemeanor interference with custody, which was bumped up to a felony in 1999. But the charge was dismissed in 2008 after the case went cold.

Investigators reopened the case in September when Richard Harter turned over the boy's Social Security card to an Indiana State Police detective.

That turned up a man with the same Social Security number and date of birth living in Long Prairie, about 100 miles northwest of Minneapolis. A driver's license photo for the man appeared to resemble Landers, police said.

Indiana State Police then contacted Minnesota law enforcement agencies, which began investigating along with the FBI and the Social Security Administration.

The grandparents were found living in nearby Browerville, Minn.

"By all accounts, it didn't appear he suffered from any abuse, either physical or mental," Galaviz said.

Cancer studies often downplay chemo side effects: study

Thu Jan 10, 2013 9:11pm EST

(Reuters) - Doctors relying on studies published in top journals for guidance on treating women with breast cancer may not be getting the most accurate information, with the side effects of various treatments downplayed, according to a North American study.

"Investigators want to go overboard to make their studies look positive," said Ian Tannock, senior author of the study that appeared in the Annals of Oncology.

In two-thirds of the 164 studies that Tannock and his colleagues scrutinized, that meant not listing serious side effects, whether of chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, in the paper's abstract. Such abstracts summarize the findings, and run a few hundred words.

That's important, said Tannock, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, because doctors have little time to read.

"Most of us are so damn busy, we only read the abstract and skim the tables and figures," he added.

In fact, a fifth of the studies didn't include serious side effects in results tables, and about a third failed to mention them in either the abstract or the discussion section.

Most surprising, said Tannock, was that in a third of the studies, if the treatment didn't work as well as one might hope, researchers moved the goalposts, reporting results that weren't what the study was originally designed to test.

Often, those so-called "secondary endpoints" may be less important and meaningful. There is a difference, for example, between showing people lived longer overall, or simply lived longer without their cancers coming back.

Cancer research is not the only area where some researchers are concerned.

In November, a group of cardiology journal editors urged authors to watch their language when describing their results, and a month earlier two pediatrics researchers warned of "spin and boasting" in their field's journals.

Tannock, whose team analyzed reports of late-stage trials of the kind used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to decide whether to approve drugs, said researchers "gain more influence with positive studies."

There are also various pressures on researchers to make their results look better than they really are, he added, including from the drug companies that often sponsor trials. But in his study, who paid for a study didn't have any relationship with how the results were presented.

Scientists may also spin their results to increase their chances of publishing in the top journals surveyed by the study. Such marquee publications can improve the chances for tenure, promotion and grants.

One of the journals whose studies Tannock and his colleagues looked at, the New England Journal of Medicine, declined to comment, saying they don't typically comment on other studies. Another, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, could not provide a comment by deadline.

Journals can help, Tannock said, by insisting that authors include serious side effects in abstracts.

"Even in 250 words, everybody can get that in there," he said. SOURCE: bit.ly/wctYGR

Congressman hits Craven college on Muslim cultures grant

Published: Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 16:31 PM.

U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, R-Farmville, has taken a stand against a recent federal grant to Craven Community College to provide 25 books and a DVD to ?introduce Muslim cultures to Americans,? Jones? office said in a news release.

The ?Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys? grant came from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jones has consistently opposed federal spending bills that give money to the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, his office said.

?It is appalling to me that a federal agency like NEH is wasting taxpayer money on programs like this,? Jones said. ?It makes zero sense for the U.S. government to borrow money from China in order to promote the culture of Islamic civilizations.?

Book titles include: ?The Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman?s Journey to Love and Islam,? ?The Story of the Qur?an,? ?Muhammad,? and ?A Quiet Revolution: The Veil?s Resurgence, from the Middle East to America.?

Jones? office said it has sent a letter to Craven County Board of Trustees Chairwoman Carol Mattocks about the congressman?s concerns.

For her part, Mattocks said she has not received the letter from Jones? office, but is aware it is coming.

?I would like to see the letter and give it due consideration,? she said.

Mattocks also said she has seen a press release about the matter.

?An institute of higher learning is always looking for ways to navigate a global society,? she said.

Judy Eurich, director of marketing, communications and development liaison at Craven Community College, said that the college is one of seven institutions of higher education in the state that received the grant. She said there was no monetary funding involved, explaining that the college will get the 25 books, a DVD series of short videos about Islamic art and architecture, two films and a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies online.

?The college had community support for the grant. Partners were the New Bern-Craven County Public Library, Carteret County Public Library and Interfaith Refugee Ministry,? Eurich said. ?This fits in the mission of the college of improving and enhancing the lives of individuals and communities by providing opportunities to prepare students for a global society.?

If Craven Community College accepts the grant, Jones has called on college leaders to follow their policy of providing ?balanced? resources for library patrons.

In a letter to the college, Jones asks the trustees to give equal exposure to books about Christianity and America?s rich Judeo-Christian heritage. The Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition has committed to donating 25 books on those topics.

According to the news release, Jerry Schill, chairman of the Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition, said the organization would provide materials about Christianity.

?However, in light of the government?s role in keeping God out of the public square and the obstacles that Christians face when it comes to prayer and the ability to publicly proclaim our faith, it just seems more than odd that the federal government will provide a package of ?Muslim Journeys? to a number of colleges nationwide,? Schill said. ?It?s even more perplexing knowing the fiscal problems facing our nation.?
