U.S. tourist feared missing in Peru sends greetings

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - One of two California tourists in Peru feared by family to have been kidnapped sent home her first online greeting in a month on Wednesday, saying she and her boyfriend were safe on a military base, playing with a monkey and being treated like celebrities.

The Facebook message was posted a day after the Peruvian government said Jamie Neal and her traveling companion, Garrett Hand, both 25, had surfaced on a riverboat in the Amazon, surprised to learn they were the subjects of an international search.

"Everyone is interviewing us and taking photos, saying that we are now famous in Peru," Neal wrote from a military installation at Pantoja, in northern Peru near the border with Ecuador, where she said she and Hand had been taken.

"The Peruvian military gave us our own house to stay in and food and a bunch of booze to drink," Neal said, adding, "This is ... insane." She also said Peruvian tourism officials planned to fly a plane to Pantoja on Thursday to meet "us and bring us gifts."

Hand later posted a separate greeting on his own Facebook page, saying simply, "I'm alive."

It was not clear why the couple were brought to a military base, and tourism officials in Lima, the Peruvian capital, were not immediately available for comment.

Neal apologized for worrying friends and family with her disappearance but said that she and Hand had been traveling through remote villages in the Amazon without electricity, telephones or Internet service.

MAKING FRIENDS WITH A MONKEY

The couple were still unable to make a phone call via Skype because of slow Internet connections at the base, she said, adding they would call home when it was possible.

Neal concluded her message saying she was "going to go play with the pet monkey we named Pepe ... he was just biting my toes."

The Oakland, California, couple embarked on an open-ended bicycle tour of South America in late November. Relatives said that after hearing from the couple regularly, all communication from the pair stopped on January 25, along with activity on their bank accounts.

Relatives and co-workers expressed fears that Hand and Neal might have been abducted.

At the time, the couple were traveling to Lima from Cusco, a mountainous region near the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, where U.S. tourists were recently advised of kidnapping risks linked to a turf war between government forces and Maoist Shining Path rebels.

Peruvian officials launched a search for Neal and Hand shortly after they were reported missing and announced on Tuesday that the couple were found safe in Angoteros, Peru, on a boat up the Napo River headed for Ecuador.

Francine Fitzgerald, Hand's mother, said she would still fear for the couple's safety until she talked to them on the phone and saw a recent photo of them.

"We need to insist that an American citizen government official is witness to this supposed meeting that is going to occur sometime within the next day or two," the Hand family said in a statement early on Wednesday.

The Hand and Neal families did not respond to interview requests on Wednesday.

Peru's minister of tourism told CNN he was "deeply concerned" that the media attention caused by the missing couple would negatively affect his country.

5 reasons Google should be afraid of Samsung

Google takes pride in the fact that its Android mobile operating system has outpaced Apple's. But the truth is, Android phones don't outsell Apple phones, Samsung phones do. Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft ? these may be Google's main competitors, but it's Samsung that could be the search giant's biggest threat.

As Samsung launches the Galaxy Note 8.0 this week, and the upcoming Galaxy S 4, not to mention a fleet of new Smart TVs, here are five reasons Google should be afraid:

1. Phones, phablets, tablets and more
Samsung has been the largest phone maker in the world for a while, but for the better part of last year, it was even out-selling Apple in the profitable smartphone category. On the surface, this is good news for Google, since Samsung is the largest ambassador of Android phones.

But compare the interface on a Google-branded Nexus phone to the software on Samsung's best-selling Galaxy S phones. The fundamental operating systems are the same, but everything from the stock apps (calendars, email, media player, etc.) to the interactive services (voice command, wireless file sharing, etc.) are different. Critics (including me) generally prefer Google's "pure" Android experience offered by Nexus devices (which also get faster OS updates), but the masses don't seem to mind Samsung's interface. And with time, money and momentum on its side, Samsung can keep improving.

The bigger the device gets, the more problematic things are for Google. Android phone apps may be a roaring success, but Android tablets have barely any native apps, especially compared to what's built for iPad. As evidenced in the expanding Note line ? which just welcomed an 8-inch model ? you can expect to see more Samsung-only features and interface tweaks, and increasing cooperation between Samsung and its software partners.

2. Retail stores
In an age when big-box stores struggle, Apple can still brag of its unbelievable (and mostly unforeseen) brick-and-mortar store success. Former skeptics now believe that the best way for electronics makers to reach their customers is through direct shopping-mall and online sales. Google is building up the online side, but recently rejected the idea of a retail store. Meanwhile, Samsung has quietly built out an online sales site, and is starting to show the urge to build some Apple Store clones of its own. In the meantime, it has clout with Best Buy, other mall retailers and even cellular carriers that Google could only dream of.

3. Mobile payments
Google got the jump on the competition when it comes to using your phone as a credit card. Built-in near-field communication chips in its Nexus phones combined with the Google Wallet system lets you, in Google's words, "shop faster, smarter and safer, in-store and online." Apple has been slower to get into mobile payments ? its Passbook app is a useful tool for those already checking into flights and buying event tickets online, but it's not yet a vehicle for commerce in itself. Now Samsung is making its own move with its own app ? called Wallet.

While the system, as it stands, currently resembles Apple's Passbook more than Google's similarly named service, don't forget that Samsung has NFC built into most of its premium phones. Not only that, as the Verge points out, it has a partnership with Visa to use the credit card company's PayWave service.

4. Media store
About two years ago, I laughed when Samsung tried to get me to buy a movie via its service on a cellphone. The selection wasn't great, and what was I going to do, watch some outdated action film on a phone's 4-inch screen? The laughter has, substantially, subsided. Those screens have gotten bigger, and Samsung has sold a lot of phones with its media store pre-installed.

Meanwhile, Samsung has expanded its media sales to its Smart TV line, and the current Smart TV interface dedicates a whole page to Samsung media. In other words, while you can still buy movies for apps like Amazon Instant Video and Vudu, you'll soon most likely stumble over stuff first on Samsung's page. How soon till you're giving it your $3.99 for a movie rental, rather than your cable provider or the competition?

5. Apple TV
Google's already spent its ammunition on something called Google TV, which you likely never bothered to purchase. Apple TV exists now too, as a cheap little add-on for Mac, iPad and iPhone owners, but Apple may yet pop a full-size TV that's so user friendly, fanboys would drool like they haven't drooled since Steve Jobs was alive.

Only thing is, Samsung already has an answer to Apple TV, and from what we saw at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Samsung isn't going to rest until it gets the interface right. Does it need Google's help to do it? Nope.

(Bonus dirt in Google's face: LG recently went out of its way to buy a third-party operating system, probably so it wouldn't have to rely on Android for its next-gen smart TVs.)

Maybe none of this matters to Google as long as it can keep making money on mobile ads on Samsung devices ? but according to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, even this relatively safe haven could be threatened by Samsung's explosive growth.

Barnes & Noble Founder Eyes Buyout of Retail Stores | TechnoBuffalo

by Roy Choi | February 25, 2013

barnesnoble-de0bdb9c2145b6a0b1c051e6e3d52b03eaa423e6-s6-c10

Barnes & Noble Inc. Chairman and Founder Leonard Riggio stated he is making a bid to purchase the brick and mortar and online presence of the book retailer. Interestingly though the bid excludes the digital books business, which one would assume has the greatest growth potential, even though the e-book business looks like it will take a bit of hit a hit in Q1.

In April, Microsoft and Barnes & Noble developed a new subsidiary?in the form of Nook Media. Pearson also took a stake in the company, bringing the total value of Nook Media at just shy of $1.8 billion. Under Nook Media, all tablet, digital content and college bookstores would be lumped under this business.?The Nook division has thus far required a lot of investment as it has been needed to develop the infrastructure and feed research and development with launching and sustaining the platform.

While spinning off the retail-end, Riggio is betting on that a large number of people are still wanting to buy physical books. Barnes & Noble currently operates 689 bookstores which generated $996 million in sales during the quarter ending Oct. 27. An analyst has estimated the retail-side is valued at $484.5 million. The deal is expected to be made in cash.

While there are times I want to have a physical copy of a book or magazine, I find that I purchase most of my reading material through Amazon, Kindle Store or iBooks. I think the last few times I?ve been inside of a book store, it was merely a waiting area while I waited for a movie to start or for dinner reservations. But Riggio, knows quite a bit about the book business, maybe he?s got some ace up his sleeve that will turn around Barnes & Noble.

US Senate panel backs Lew nomination for Treasury

(AP) ? The Senate Finance Committee has approved President Barack Obama's choice of Jacob Lew to be Treasury secretary.

Lew would succeed Timothy Geithner, who completed a tumultuous four-year term in which he helped lead the administration's response to the financial crisis and recession. Lew previously served as Obama's budget director and chief of staff.

The committee approved Lew, 19-5. The nomination now goes to the full Senate. The timing of a Senate vote is unclear.

In the hearing, the sharpest questions came from Republicans who pressed Lew about his tenure at Citigroup, where he was a top executive from 2006 until early 2009, a period covering the height of the financial crisis. Lew was grilled about a nearly $1 million bonus he received while Citi was being bailed out by taxpayers.

Marac settles loan insurance rebates | Stuff.co.nz

Heartland Bank subsidiary Marac Finance has settled with the Commerce Commission after deciding to refund 1000 customers more than half a million dollars.

The finance company has paid out $567,000 to customers who had repaid loans early but had not been refunded premiums for their loan insurance.

The commission's view was that Marac had breached the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act, which requires lenders to refund an appropriate portion of a premium if a loan is repaid early.

The commission said Marac was likely to have misled customers by telling them that their insurance would be rebated, potentially also breaching the Fair Trading Act.

The government watchdog's general manager of competition, Kate Morrison, said the settlement was "a timely and cost-effective way of achieving the right result".

"We are pleased that Marac has agreed to do the right thing by its customers and make these payments," she said.

The refunds apply to affected customers who repaid their loans early between 2006 and 2010.

The commission said Marac had immediately changed its practices when the matter was brought to its attention in late-2010.

Morrison warned that borrowers relied on the information lenders provided, and often had no way of knowing if the balance owing was correct.

"Borrowers should be aware that if a loan is being repaid early, insurance may be rebated, and they can ask the lender if there are any rebates due to them," she said.

Marac Finance merged with CBS Canterbury and Southern Cross Building Society in January 2011 to form Heartland, which became the country's newest registered bank last year.

The flu hit American workers hard in January

Getty Images stock

This appears to have been a common sight around the office in January.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

That nasty flu season appears to have taken a toll on our productivity as well as our health.

More American workers called in sick in January than during any month in nearly five years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said this week.

Nearly 2.9 million full-time workers only worked part-time during the week in which they were surveyed because of illness, injury or medical appointment, the BLS said. Also,?more than 1.2 million people were off work for the whole week they were surveyed because they were sick, the BLS said.

That?s the highest level of people calling in sick since February?2008, when 1.3 million people missed a full week of work and 3.3 million full-time workers only worked part-time because of illness.

The BLS noted that more people typically call in sick during the winter months, when seasonal illnesses such as cold and the flu are common. But this year appears to have been especially hard on Americans, and on workers.

The flu season got off to an early and aggressive start, but the good news is that it appears to have peaked in late January, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Still, experts warn that the flu could continue to circulate for months.

In addition, other bugs, such as common colds and the stomach flu, can keep workers from heading into the office.

For many workers, getting sick can literally be costly. There is no federal requirement that companies provide paid sick leave, although companies who are subject to the Family and Medical Leave Act requires unpaid sick leave.

About 66 percent of workers have access to paid sick leave, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Full-time workers are much more likely than part-time workers to have paid sick leave, according to the BLS.

Have you had to call in sick yet this season?

Rebel Apple investor tries to rally Street

(AP) ? A Wall Street maverick who wants Apple Inc. to share more of its wealth with investors took his case to other shareholders Thursday, urging them to send management a message by voting against a company proposal at the upcoming annual meeting.

On a conference call with investors and reporters, David Einhorn, founder of hedge fund Greenlight Capital, laid out the case for something he calls "iPrefs," a class of dividend-bearing preferred stock. He wants Apple to issue these shares free to shareholders as way of committing to use its massive profits for the benefit of shareholders.

Right now, Apple hands only a small amount of its profits to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. The rest of the money goes in the bank, where Apple's cash hoard amounted to $137 billion at the end of last year.

Einhorn's proposal isn't on the agenda for Apple's annual shareholders meeting next Wednesday. Instead, he wants to turn voting on a company proposal ?one that attempts to bundle several governance measures? into a referendum on his plan. Among the measures is one that would eliminate the board's leeway to issue preferred shares without approval from shareholders, something that would make implementing Einhorn's iPrefs somewhat more time-consuming.

Einhorn sued Apple earlier this month to force it to unbundle the various governance measures and permit voting on each one.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's proposal puts more power in the hands of shareholders, making it difficult to understand why a shareholder would fight it. Calling the fight a waste of time, Cook said Apple won't squander money by mailing letters to shareholders to persuade them to vote for the proposal.

"My preference is that everyone on both sides of this issue would take the money they're spending on this and donating it to a worthy cause," Cook said at an investor conference last week.

However, Cook said the company is actively looking at ways to use its cash for the benefit of shareholders, and would consider Einhorn's proposal.

Few other investors have come out in favor Einhorn's plan. The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, has said it will vote for Apple's proposal, which would also let shareholders vote against directors. CalPERS owns 2.7 million Apple shares, nearly three times as many as Greenlight.

On Thursday, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, which has a $400 million endowment and invests in both Apple and Einhorn's hedge fund, said it rejected the "false choice" Einhorn was offering.

Einhorn intends "to hold governance reforms hostage to his efforts to draw cash out of Apple. This flies in the face of what we know about long-term value creation," said Simon Greer, CEO of the foundation.

A company with excess cash will usually reward shareholders by raising its dividend or issuing a one-time dividend. It could also buy back more shares. Einhorn believes none of these routes would yield as much shareholder value as the iPrefs, because their 4 percent annual dividend yield would make them attractive to investors that otherwise wouldn't look at Apple shares, like pension funds and endowments.

"In contrast to the rest of Apple's business, where innovation is the norm, Apple's attitude toward managing its cash has been exceedingly non-innovative," Einhorn said on the call.

Greenlight has been an Apple shareholder since 2010, and has 1.3 million shares worth about $580 million.

Apple shares closed down $2.78, or less than one percent, Thursday at $446.07. The shares are down 37 percent from their all-time peak of $705.07 hit in September. Investors are concerned that the company's growth is slowing after a remarkable decade. Its profits remain high.

Einhorn, 44, been highly successful at "shorting" the stocks of companies that have hidden weaknesses, effectively betting that their value will decline. He shorted Lehman Brothers in 2007, a year before the financial firm went under. More recently, his comments have sent the stocks of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Herbalife and Chipotle Mexican Grill plummeting.

Forbes lists his wealth as of Sept. 2012 at $1.2 billion.

AMPAS drops "85th Academy Awards" - now it's just "The Oscars"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The upcoming Academy Awards show is the 85th, a significant anniversary that in past years might have brought a reunion of past winners, special film clips or some sort of recognition on the Oscar show.

But this year, the number 85 has been quietly retired, and so has the phrase "Academy Awards."

Both disappeared from official AMPAS materials about three weeks ago. "We're rebranding it," Oscar show co-producer Neil Meron told TheWrap on Monday. "We're not calling it 'the 85th annual Academy Awards,' which keeps it mired somewhat in a musty way. It's called 'The Oscars.'"

During TheWrap's interview with Meron and his partner Craig Zadan, Meron said they were under the impression that the new approach would continue in the future.

Academy spokeswoman Teni Melidonian confirmed that the change has happened for the upcoming show, but described it as the kind of typical adjustment in the ad campaign and overall message that takes place every year in consultation with the show's producers and the network, ABC.

"It is right for this show, but we could easily go back to using 'Academy Awards' next year," she said.

The majority of the show's posters and advertising materials focus on host Seth MacFarlane and the phrase "The Oscars," with no mention of how long the Academy has been hosting this shindig and no use of the phrase "Academy Awards."

And Academy press releases dealing with the upcoming show, which used to routinely mention the number, stopped doing so around the beginning of February. The last such AMPAS release appears to have come on January 29; since then, every release has found ways to avoid the phrase "85th Academy Awards."

When initial voting began, for example, the Academy's December 14 release began, "Nominations voting for the 85th Academy Awards will open at 8 a.m. PT, Monday, December 17 ? "

But when final voting began seven weeks later, its release said this: "Final voting for the Oscars will officially open on Friday, February 8th at 8 a.m. ? "

The phrase "The 85th Academy Awards," which used to begin the last paragraph of most Oscar-related press releases from the Academy, has been replaced with "Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2012."

It's hard to say that the Academy is completely turning its back on its history, given that this year's show includes a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movies and a tribute to movie musicals of the past decade. But it is consciously (if quietly) looking not to use a big round number when trying to woo viewers closer to the age of Quvenzhane Wallis (9) than Emmanuelle Riva (85), and trying to get less formal by making the show's nickname its official name.

"It'll be like the Grammys," said Meron. "The Grammys don't get a number, and neither will the Oscars."

He's not exactly right: The top of the Recording Academy's Grammy page (right) is headed, "The 55th Grammys," and the number appears in the first sentence of most NARAS press releases.

The Oscar.com page, on the other hand, just says "The Oscars."

For this year, at least.

Change Number of App Tile Rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell

If you are using Windows 8, you must have observed, the number of rows for the tiles on the Start Screen is fully dependent on the screen resolution or window size that fits on your Windows Screen by default. But sometimes may want to display a specific number of rows of tiles on the Start Screen that is not dependent on the screen size. And there?s no direct option to change this number of tile rows.

In one of our earlier post we have seen how to change this using Registry Editor. In this post we will see how to change the number of app tiles rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell Script and VBScript. You don?t have to know the coding ? these ready-made scripts are provided on the TechNet Script Center Gallery. You just have to run the script. We will see both the methods, one now and?the other method in our next post.?By default, my PC has 5 rows of app tiles. What I?ll do is, change it to 3 using Power Shell Script and change back to 5 using VBScript in the next post.

Using PowerShell Script to Change Number of App Tile Rows

So first of all go to TechNet Script Center Gallery to download the PowerShell zip file?from Microsoft. Now that you have downloaded the script file extract its contents.

Now as said we will make use of PowerShell Script. Just unzip or extract all the contents of ChangeNumberOfAppsTileRows (PowerShell).zip . The contents will be extracted to a folder . The folder will have the Script Module ChangeNumberOfAppsTileRows.psm1 . We have to run this in PowerShell Console.

Now start Windows PowerShell as administrator. (If you haven?t got PowerShell pinned to task bar,? just follow this. On the StartScreen?just type PowerShell and it?ll list the app Windows PowerShell. Just right click on it and from app bar below, click on Pin to task bar, now you have the Windows Power Shell icon on task bar)

ps 1 Change Number of App Tile Rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell

Now we have PowerShell console opened. To run the script in the Windows PowerShell Console, type the command:

cmd 2 Change Number of App Tile Rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell

This command will change the number of tile rows on the Start screen.

shell 3 Change Number of App Tile Rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell

When the script finishes running, it?ll show the message in the console as done Successfully . And then you?ll be promoted in the console to log off action. Type Y and it?ll signout. And when you sign-in back the number of tile rows will be changed to 3.

ss 4 400x140 Change Number of App Tile Rows on Windows 8 Start Screen using PowerShell

Simple, right? So that?s how you use the PowerShell Script to change the number of App Tile rows on Start screen.

In our next post we will see how to use VBScript to change Windows 8 Start Screen Number Of App Row Tiles.

2 firefighters dead, 2 hurt in Texas lodge fire

BRYAN, Texas (AP) ? Two Texas fire lieutenants have died of burns after battling a lodge hall fire, a city official said Saturday.

Gregory Pickard and Eric Wallace, both with the department in the Central Texas city of Bryan, were in a group of firefighters responding to the blaze about midnight Friday at a Knights of Columbus hall, city spokeswoman Mary Lynne Stratta said.

The team entered the burning building but didn't emerge when ordered to evacuate, Stratta said.

Wallace, 36, died at the scene and Pickard, 54, on Saturday at a hospital in Galveston, she said.

"He called for help, said he was low on air," Stratta said of Wallace, a 13-year Bryan Fire Department veteran.

With Wallace still inside, Pickard and two other firefighters ? Ricky Mantey Jr. and Mitchel Moran ? were sent in to rescue him when the roof collapsed in flames, Fire Chief Randy McGregor said.

Rapid response units found the men inside the building. Mantey, 30, and Moran, 21, also were injured. They were taken to the Galveston hospital with burns. On Saturday, Stratta said they were both in serious but stable condition.

The Texas State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire in Bryan, about 90 miles northwest of Houston. A news release from the city said nothing was being held at the hall at the time.

"These four courageous individuals represent the best of the profession and are true heroes in every sense of the word," McGregor said.

Services for Wallace are scheduled for Thursday in Bryan, while those for Pickard, a 32-year veteran of the department, are pending.

Genes activated for human speech similar to ones used by singing songbirds

BOSTON, MA -- The genes activated for human speech are similar to the ones used by singing songbirds, new experiments suggest.

These results, which are not yet published, show that gene products produced for speech in the cortical and basal ganglia regions of the human brain correspond to similar molecules in the vocal communication areas of the brains of zebra finches and budgerigars. But these molecules aren't found in the brains of doves and quails -- vocal birds that do not learn their sounds.

"The results suggest that similar behavior and neural connectivity for a convergent complex trait like speech and song are associated with many similar genetic changes," said Duke neurobiologist Erich Jarvis, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

Jarvis studies the molecular pathways that songbirds use while learning to sing. In past experiments, he and his collaborators found that songbirds have a connection between the front part of their brain and nerves in the brainstem that control movement in muscles that make songs in birds. They've seen this circuit in a more primitive form related to ultrasonic mating calls in mice. Humans also have this motor learning pathway for speech.

From this and other work, Jarvis developed the motor theory for the origin of vocal learning, which describes how ancient brain systems used to control movement and motor learning evolved into brain systems for learning and producing song and spoken language.

The issue with Windows Phone 7.8 Live Tiles could be more problematic than first assumed

Windows Phone 7.8

We've previously looked at a?Live Tile issue on Windows Phone 7.8, but it seems as though the issue with the feature could be worse than we originally thought. Owners have complained that tiles are not updating correctly or are "bugging out" with massive amounts of data being utilised with consequences on the battery charge. This isn't good, especially when the Live Tiles are a major selling point of the OS.

According to Heathcliff, a well-known name in the Windows Phone homebrew community, the cause is on an OS level, not by resident developers. Three methods are available for apps to update Live Tiles, but two of the three options have been found to be bug-ridden or broken. Shell Tile Update was the only process found to be working correctly.

The first faulty method is known as a Shell Tile Scheduler, which is when an app retrieves an URL and displays the images on the tile. The second method is known as HTTP Notification Channel. This follows a similar path as the scheduler, but goes through Microsoft's notification servers.

Heathcliff notes that the second method listed is completely useless and is even shocked to learn it even passed quality assurance testing. We'll be looking at developers to take bug reports from users seriously when it comes to issues such as faulty Live Tiles. There's another problem with these rogue tiles - not all apps using the above methods will break, making it difficult to locate affected apps.

Heathcliff recommends consumers to be aware of any Live Tiles that may 'flicker' when pinned to the start screen, stating that it's a symptom of the app repeatedly attempting to updated and refresh the tile itself. Should an app be experiencing such behaviour, the best course of action is to un-pin it to prevent high data usage and battery drain.?

Results from our recent poll

We've noticed (along with other developers) that there's something wrong with Live Tiles on Windows Phone 7.8. Here's hoping that Microsoft follows these reports closely and takes a good look at issues highlighted by Heathcliff.

Have you experienced glitching Live Tiles and high data usage?

There is a higher authority than Obama | Reporting on the Middle ...

Obama?s visit, despite reports to the contrary, will not go by without pressure on Israel. Obama would do well to notice the changes that have occurred within and around Israel.

From Ron Jager, February 10, 2013

The Ides of March was the name for a date on the Roman calendar corresponding with our date of March 15. It was a fateful date, the chosen day for the assassination of Julius Caesar. Before Caesar went to the theater of Pompey to attend the Senate meeting, he had been given advice not to go, but he didn?t listen. Because of the assassination and the soothsayer?s exchange with Julius Caesar about the dangers he faced in Shakespeare?s Julius Caesar tragedy, the Ides of March now signifies a day of foreboding.

Obama?s impending visit to Israel during the month of March is not a coincidence, but was chosen to bear an implicit meaning for Prime Minister Netanyahu and all of Israel. As Obama?s March visit approaches, Secretary of State Kerry and others will be ? figuratively ? repeating; ?Beware the Ides of March?. What they will really be saying is, either play ball and give Obama his one success in the Middle East, or else, you and Israel will be blamed for all that has gone wrong in the Middle East, and any expectations that Israel can depend on America to prevent Iran from reaching nuclear capability will be history.

Unfortunately, Obama?s advisors are still deeply involved in promoting thinking that is obsolete and detached from the changes that have occurred in the Middle East and in Israel during Obama?s watch. The reason is most likely that Obama chooses to continue to listen to the same American Jewish Democratic supporters who promote wishful thinking and ?Tikkun Olam? philosophies rather than well thought-out analyses reflecting the changes occurring in our region.

Obama?s Presidency has resulted in the Middle East becoming one giant sea of Islamic nations based on the Sharia, Islamic law that justifies a one-dimensional interpretation of civilization in favor of Islam. These newly formed Islamic states cropping up one by one on Israel?s borders have taken the region back to the future. Accepting Israel?s right to existence as the home of the Jewish nation, allowing basic human rights for their own citizens, or even sustaining democracy after being democratically elected are all no longer applicable to the Islamic Middle East after four years of the Obama Presidency.

Concerning the Palestinian Arabs, it is probable that the same blind hindsight will continue to prevail. The idea that concealing the truth about the Palestinian Arabs, and their inability to make peace with Israel will resuscitate the tenuous hope for peace will remain a hallmark of Obama?s expected behavior during his visit. This kind of thinking is similar to the mistakes made by both the previous Democratic Administrations and some Israeli leaders who spent the 1990s ignoring Palestinian Arab violations of the peace accords because they thought holding them accountable would derail negotiations. This strategic error only encouraged the Palestinian Arabs to ?anti up the stake? and led to the terror of the second intifada, unleashing years of suicide bombers and resulting in thousands of Israeli?s killed and wounded.

Within Israel, two major intertwined developments will change forever the political and economic landscape of Israel. Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid party, has emerged as the leader of the second largest party and will lead to one of two possibilities ? Shas, the Sephardic ultra-Orthodox party, will join the coalition and have no power, or it will be kept outside the coalition and have no power. Either way, Shas?s demotion from political kingmaker to political deadweight is a transformative development.

One of the major sources of social friction that has weakened Israeli society over the past few decades is a perception shared by most Israelis that the ultra-Orthodox community, who do not participate in either the common burden of national defense or in the economic life of the country ? but due to Israel?s proportional electoral system have managed to maintain control over the state religious institutions and so dictate the relationship between religion and society in Israel since the emergence of Shas in the late 1970?s ? will be coming to an end.

This expected change will make Judaism part of the lifeblood of the country in a way that is relevant to the lives of the vast majority of Israelis and pave the way for Israel?s further emergence as the spiritual center of world Jewry. The ripple effects of such a reform would extend to nearly every corner of Israel, and indeed, to nearly every corner of the Jewish world.

The third and final transformative change that has been equally ignored by the Obama administration has to do with Israel?s emerging energy independence. ISRAEL has over the past two years conducted successful test pumping of natural gas from Israel?s offshore Leviathan natural gas field. According to most experts, the size of Israel?s newly discovered gas reserves are comparable to or are greater than oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. In the next four years, Israel will become a major natural gas exporter and will make great strides in developing her recently discovered shale oil deposits.

Under the political and economic leadership of Netanyahu who is an ideologically committed champion of free market economics, Israel?s emergence as an energy exporter will have a transformational impact on Israel?s economic independence and long-term viability, and her ability to sustain an effective deterrence against Iran and other potential enemies.

In Israel, March symbolizes the end of winter and the abundance of rain that has blessed all of Israel. Let?s not forget that an adequate ?natural? water supply is one of G-d?s ways to show us His appreciation for what we are doing on His Land, as it says in the book of D?varim 11:13-21 (Deuteronomy) ?And it will come to pass that if you continually hearken to my commandments that I command you today, to love Hashem, your G-d, and to serve Him, with all your heart and with all your soul ? then I will provide rain for your land in its proper time, the early and late rains, that you may gather in your grain, your wine and your oil.? I will provide grass in your field for your cattle and you will eat and be satisfied??

As the Ides of March approach, and President Obama visits Israel, he would be wise to be reminded of Who really pulls the strings.

Blizzard blankets Northeast, disrupting traffic and flights

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A blizzard continued to pummel the Northeastern United States on Saturday, disrupting thousands of flights, shutting down roads and mass transit and blanketing the region with heavy snowfall.

Hundreds of thousands of people lost power, with more than 200,000 reported outages in Massachusetts, more than 100,000 in Rhode Island, and 30,000 in Connecticut, according to local utilities.

Forecasters warned that about 2 feet of snow would blanket most of the Boston area with some spots getting as much as 30 inches. New York was due to get about a foot in some areas, while heavy snowfall was also expected in Connecticut and Maine.

Winds reached 35 to 40 miles per hour (56 to 64 km per hour) by Friday afternoon and forecasters expected gusts up to 60 mph as the evening wore on.

The storm prompted the governors of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Maine to declare states of emergency in the face of the fearsome snowstorm. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick took the rare step of announcing a ban on most car travel starting Friday afternoon, while Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy closed the state's highways to all but emergency vehicles.

By Friday night some commuter trains that run between New York City and Westchester County, Long Island and Connecticut had already been suspended. Amtrak suspended railroad service between New York, Boston and points north on Friday afternoon.

In many cases, authorities ordered non-essential government workers to stay home, urged private employers to do the same, told people to prepare for power outages and encouraged them to check on elderly or disabled neighbors.

"People need to take this storm seriously," said Malloy, Connecticut's governor. "Please stay home once the weather gets bad except in the case of real emergency."

The storm wasn't bad news for everyone.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested people relax at home - cook or watch a movie. Bloomberg said he planned on catching up on his sleep.

As she stocked up at a Brooklyn grocery store, 28-year-old Jackie Chevallier said that after two years without much snow, she was looking forward to waking up to a sea of white.

"I'd like to go sledding," she said.

The storm also posed a risk of flooding at high tide to areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy last October.

"Many of the same communities that were inundated by Hurricane Sandy's tidal surge just about 100 days ago are likely to see some moderate coastal flooding this evening," said Bloomberg.

Lower drinking ages lead to more binge drinking, study of U.S. states finds

Feb. 6, 2013 ? People who grew up in U.S. states where it was legal to drink alcohol before age 21 are more likely to be binge drinkers later in life, according to a study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The findings are available online in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

The researchers tracked the long-term drinking behavior of more than 39,000 people who began consuming alcohol in the 1970s, when some states had legal drinking ages as low as 18.

"It wasn't just that lower minimum drinking ages had a negative impact on people when they were young," explains first author Andrew D. Plunk, PhD, a post-doctoral research fellow in psychiatry. "Even decades later, the ability to legally purchase alcohol before age 21 was associated with more frequent binge drinking."

The study shows that people who lived in states with lower minimum drinking ages weren't more likely to consume more alcohol overall or to drink more frequently than those from states where the drinking age was 21, but when they did drink, they were more likely to drink heavily.

The effect was most pronounced among men who did not attend college. And the researchers say the findings should be a warning to those who advocate lowering the minimum drinking age.

"Binge drinking on college campuses is a very serious problem," Plunk says. "But it's also important not to completely forget about young people who aren't on college campuses. In our study, they had the greatest risk of suffering the long-term consequences linked to lower drinking ages."

Plunk and his colleagues found that even decades later, men who grew up in states with a legal drinking age lower than 21 were 19 percent more likely to binge drink more than once per month. Among those who didn't go to college, the odds of binging more than once a month increased by 31 percent.

Through surveys conducted in the early 1990s and again in the early 2000s, the researchers tracked the average daily alcohol intake, overall drinking frequency and the frequency of binge episodes -- defined as five or more drinks during a single period of drinking for a man or four-plus drinks for a woman. They also looked at how often a person drank but did not binge, which is thought to be a less harmful drinking pattern.

"There's a difference between tracking average daily consumption of alcohol and measuring drinking patterns," explains senior author Richard A. Grucza, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry. "Merely tracking average daily consumption can hide harmful drinking patterns. Averaging one drink per day doesn't sound like much, but if that same person has all their drinks for the week in one sitting, well that's a potential problem."

Due to concerns about binge drinking on college campuses, some policymakers think that lowering the drinking age may encourage college students to moderate their alcohol use.

"The 'take away message' is that we need to consider all of the potential consequences of changing the drinking age," Plunk explains. "We shouldn't be too narrow in our focus when we think about how young people are affected by these laws. This study shows there's a large population that benefitted from a higher legal drinking age. Laws apply to everyone, but if they are based only on the impact on one group like college students, we may end up forgetting about how those laws affect other people."
