In celebration of its 10 billionth application download, the Android Market is putting top smartphone games and apps on sale for 10 cents each. The promotion will last 10 days, according to the Android Developers blog, and will feature "a new set of awesome apps each day". Today's promotion features 10 apps, but the blog does not mention whether or not the other nine days will as well.
According to the infographic on the Android Developers blog, it took about one and a half years for the Android Market to go from 1 billion app downloads to 10 billion. From 6 billion to 10 billion took only six months.
Here's a look at some of the games and apps that are on sale:
Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD
The Asphalt series from Gameloft are car racing games. Asphalt Adrenaline 6 invites gamers to "Discover 42 cars and bikes" and "Collect them in your own 3D garage," plus it offers online and local multiplayer modes. This HD game requires a relatively powerful Android smartphone.
Color and Draw for kids: Phone edition
The "phone edition" part is to set it apart from the tablet edition, which is also available on the Android Market but isn't part of the sale. The iPad edition of this children's sketching toy received the Children's Technology Review Editor's Choice Award for 2010, but customer reviews of the Android phone version suggest that it doesn't work well on phones with large screens.
Endomondo Sports Tracker PRO
This is the pay-for version of the free Endomondo Sports Tracker app, which uses your phone's GPS to keep track of how far you run or jog. The Pro version lets you set time or calorie goals, and try to beat your performance in previous workouts.
Minecraft: Pocket Edition
The Android version of the indie PC hit has been optimized for the game controller on the Xperia Play, but will work with other high-powered devices. It doesn't feature nearly as many options as the PC game -- a customer review by mythofsisyphus says that it "Needs some major updates" -- but it offers the same basic "computer building blocks" gameplay as the original.
SketchBook Mobile
This "Editor's Choice" app from Autodesk, makers of AutoCAD and 3ds Max, is billed as "a professional-grade paint and drawing application." It offers a comprehensive set of handheld drawing tools, and is designed to work with an optional third-party stylus. SketchBook Mobile is listed as being compatible with low-end Android devices, but at least a 1 GHz processor is recommended.
More to come?
The graphic used to advertise the sale on the Android Market home page shows apps that are not listed in today's sale, including Need for Speed: Shift, Fruit Ninja, and Tetris. No official announcement says whether or not they'll be featured, however.
