Ahead of the Bell: Bar set high for LinkedIn's 4Q

(AP) ? LinkedIn 's knack of surprising Wall Street, an unbroken streak that winds back through every quarter since May 2011 after the company first went public, will be on the line when it posts fourth-quarter results Thursday afternoon.

In every instance, key numbers from the online professional networking service have beaten expectations.

Investors appear confident that the company will keep its streak alive. The stock hit a new high of $127.45 in late January, and is still hovering near there. Shares closed Wednesday at $125.77, and rose in after-hours trading.

Those that bought in almost two years ago at the initial public offering price of $45 per share have nearly tripled their investment.

Analysts, average, are expecting LinkedIn to post adjusted earnings of 19 cents per share on revenue of $280 million.

LinkedIn's market value of about $13 billion has been propelled by rapid growth, as more people around the world share information about their careers and aspirations on its free service. The Mountain View, Calif., company makes most of its money by selling subscriptions to employers, headhunters and others broader access to LinkedIn's database. Online advertising also brings in revenue.

Shortly after the year began, LinkedIn disclosed that it had surpassed 200 million accountholders for the first time. That's more than double the total of less than two years ago.

The fourth-quarter earnings report will show how many accountholders the company had at the end of December. It could be slightly below 200 million. LinkedIn Corp. ended September with 187 million members.

UFC 156?s Three Stars are all Strikeforce vets

Though not every fight at UFC 156 lived up to its hype, the ones that delivered really came through. Former Strikeforce fighters went 4-0 and really stood out among the crowd.

No. 1 star ? Antonio Silva: Heading into the fight with Alistair Overeem, "Big Foot" was 2-2. While he beat up on Travis Browne and MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko, he also lost big to Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez. He definitely didn't have the same invincible aura as Overeem, but that didn't matter once they were in the cage. Silva's heavy hands and Overeem's gameplan meant Silva was the one who earned the big knockout, and the Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star ? Tyron Woodley: With a strong wrestling background honed at the University of Missouri, Woodley is quite skilled at grinding out opponents for decision wins. He hasn't had a stoppage win since 2010, but that changed quickly on Saturday night. Woodley's overhand right took out Jay Hieron in just 36 seconds. Even UFC president Dana White admitted Woodley had the Knockout of the Night bonus until Silva's KO of Overeem.

No. star ? Bobby Green: His third-round ground and pound led to a rear naked choke of Jacob Volkmann. Green was able to control a Division I All-American wrestler, which is not an easy task. With Saturday's win, he is on a five-fight win streak and showed he is ready for the UFC.

Who were your three stars? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Poor mental health leads to unhealthy behaviors among low-income adults

Feb. 4, 2013 ? Study says binge drinking, smoking, and illegal drug use may be used to cope with depression and anxiety

Poor mental health leads to unhealthy behaviors in low-income adults - not the other way around, according to a new study? by Dr. Jennifer Walsh and colleagues from the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital in the US. In this study, stress and anxiety predicted subsequent health-compromising behaviors, such as smoking, binge drinking, illegal drug use, unprotected sex and unhealthy diets. One possible explanation for these findings is that health compromising behaviors may be used as coping mechanisms to manage the effects of stress and anxiety. The study is published online in the Springer journal, Translational Behavioral Medicine?, and is part of an issue focusing on multiple health behavior change.

Dr. Walsh and her team explored the relationship between health-compromising behaviors and mental health in the context of socioeconomic disadvantage to determine whether mental health problems lead to subsequent unhealthy behaviors, or whether these behaviors lead to mental health problems.

A total of 482 adults, receiving care at a sexually transmitted infection clinic, took part in the study. They were asked to complete an online interview at the start of the study and then three, six, nine and twelve months later. The researchers assessed a number of behaviors: substance use (binge drinking, smoking, illegal drug use), exercise, as well as sexual, dietary and sleep behaviors. They also measured levels of anxiety, depression and perceived stress.

Health-compromising behaviors, including substance use, unprotected sex, poor diet and insufficient or excessive sleep, were common among patients attending the clinic. Participants with very low incomes reported a higher number of health-compromising behaviors, as well as more symptoms of depression and anxiety and higher levels of stress, compared to those participants with higher incomes.

The authors found that symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as perceived stress, predicted later levels of unhealthy behaviors, when both socioeconomic status and earlier behaviors were taken into account. In contrast, unhealthy behaviors did not predict later mental health. These results show that unhealthy behaviors follow depression, anxiety and stress, rather than giving rise to them.

The authors suggest that targeting mental health may offer a way to promote improvements across health behaviors: "Clinicians and practitioners should recognize that there may be high rates of depression, anxiety and stress, as well as health-compromising behaviors, in low-income populations, and they should assess mental health as well as these behaviors." Referring patients for mental health counselling or stress reduction techniques may help to improve their health behaviors.

Real Estate: Flipping Fresno? | Fresno Bee Newsroom Blog

Invitation to ?Flipping Fresno,? an investment workshop presented by the two men from the cable television show ?Flipping Boston.?

One of my editors got this notice in the mail last week.

It?s a special invitation to a pre-auction event at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Fresno on Wednesday where you can learn the investment strategies of Peter Souhleris and Dave Seymour ? the stars of ?Flipping Boston? a cable television show on A&E.

By attending, you can get access to government real estate programs, money and private pre-auction real estate inventories, the invite says.

But registration is limited. Are you a participant? Have you attended one of these things and learned enough to be a successful investor? Let me know.

It?doesn?t?look like they are filming an actual show in Fresno, which at first glance, this card makes it seem like they are. They?re just coming to town to show you how to be an investor.

What are your thoughts on these workshops?

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Five men pleaded not guilty Saturday after being formally indicted in a special court on 13 charges, including rape and murder, in the fatal gang rape of a woman in a New Delhi bus, a lawyer said.

The men signed statements in the fast-track court saying they were innocent, said one of the men's lawyers. The lawyer cannot be identified under a gag order imposed by the court.

The court will begin hearing the evidence of witnesses on Tuesday. If convicted, the five men could face the death penalty.

A sixth suspect, who is 17, will be tried in a juvenile court and could face a maximum sentence of three years in a reform facility if convicted.

Police say the victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding a bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests, sparking a debate about the treatment of women in India and highlighting the inability of law enforcement agencies to protect them.

Also on Saturday, women's groups across the country slammed a decision by the government to bring changes in India's rape laws through an ordinance.

A government panel set up after the outcry over the gang rape and weeks of street protests by students and women examined India's criminal justice system's treatment of violence against women. After examining more than 80,000 submissions, the panel, headed by retired Chief Justice J.S. Verma, came out with a 630-page report recommending amendments to the laws governing crimes against women.

On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Cabinet approved an ordinance to introduce stricter penalties for crimes against women, including death in extreme cases of rape. It also approved increasing the maximum seven-year sentence for rape to 20 years and imposing stiff punishments for crimes such as stalking, cyber stalking and voyeurism.

The ordinance has to be signed by President Pranab Mukherjee to become law.

Women activists have accused the government of ignoring many key suggestions of the panel, including prosecuting army and paramilitary soldiers accused of sexual offenses and barring politicians facing rape charges from contesting elections.

"The ordinance is a complete betrayal of the faith people had reposed in the government," said Kavita Krishnan, a women's rights activist. "This is a fraud and the people are going to be out on the streets protesting this mockery of the Verma commission's recommendations."

Women's groups have appealed to Mukherjee not to sign the ordinance into law until it can be debated in Parliament.

"We are alarmed at the complete lack of transparency shown by the government. We call upon the president not to sign such an ordinance," five women's groups said in a statement.

The government said Saturday that a parliamentary committee would examine all the recommendations of the panel.

"The government is aware that we need stringent laws to protect women," said R. P. N. Singh, junior minister for home affairs. "We will discuss the recommendations and make further changes to the law that may be required."

(AP) ? The suicide bomber who struck the U.S. Embassy in Ankara spent five years in prison on terrorism charges but was released after being diagnosed with a hunger strike-related brain disorder, officials said Saturday.

The bomber, identified as 40-year-old leftist militant Ecevit Sanli, killed himself and a Turkish security guard on Friday, in what U.S. officials said was a terrorist attack. Sanli was armed with TNT and also detonated a hand grenade, officials said.

The U.S. flag at the embassy flew at half-staff and already tight security was increased. Police sealed off a street in front of the security checkpoint where the explosion knocked a door off its hinges and littered the road with debris. Police vehicles were parked in streets surrounding the building.

Sanli's motives were still unclear. He had been a member of the outlawed Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, which has claimed responsibility for assassinations and bombings since the 1970s but has been relatively quiet in recent years. Compared to al Qaida, it has not been seen as a strong terrorist threat.

Officials said Sanil was arrested in 1997 for alleged involvement in attacks on the police headquarters and a military guesthouse in Istanbul and jailed on charges of membership in the group. While in prison awaiting trial, he took part in a major hunger strike that led to the deaths of dozens of inmates, according to a statement from the Ankara governor's office. The protesters opposed a maximum-security system in which prisoners were held in small cells instead of large wards.

Sanli was released in 2002 after being diagnosed with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a malnutrition-related brain illness that affects vision, muscle coordination and memory and that can cause hallucinations. Sanli fled Turkey after his release and was wanted by Turkish authorities, the statement said. He was convicted in absentia in 2002.

The Ankara governor's office, citing the findings of a bomb squad that inspected the site, said Sanli had used 6 kilograms of TNT for the suicide attack and also detonated a hand grenade. Officials had earlier said that the bomber detonated a suicide vest at the checkpoint on the outer perimeter of the compound.

The guard who was killed was standing outside the checkpoint. A Turkish TV journalist was seriously wounded and two other guards had lighter wounds

The attack drew quick condemnation from Turkey, the U.S., Britain and other nations, and officials from both Turkey and the U.S. pledged to work together to fight terrorism.

It was the second deadly assault on a U.S. diplomatic post in five months. On Sept. 11, 2012, terrorists attacked a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, killing U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The attackers in Libya were suspected to have ties to Islamist extremists, and one is in custody in Egypt.

U.S. diplomatic facilities in Turkey have been targeted previously by terrorists. In 2008, an attack blamed on al-Qaida-affiliated militants outside the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul left three assailants and three policemen dead.
